The Doyennes
Descendants
We've been lucky enough to feature the Descendants series of Nicole Rafiki, a visual artist, writer & editor based in Oslo, Norway. This beautiful series celebrates the diversity of people of African descent all over the world.

We love so much of Nicole Rafiki's work that it was hard to choose a series to feature. An interdisciplinary artist with a background in international development studies and from working as an advisor in a facility for underaged refugees and asylum seekers, Nicole uses design, text, and photography to re-imagine and challenge the stereotypical depiction of spaces, contexts and the people who are affected by global migration.

We particularly fell in love with her Descendants series, which has been exhibited in Oslo, Kristiansand, Bergen and Trondheim and captures the beauty of everyday life in 10 different countries on 3 different continents. Inspired by the UN international decade for people of African descent (2015-2024), the photos celebrate the diversity in livelihoods, appearances and identities of people of African descent all over the world.
